Throwback Thursday - Vienna

Good morning all.

I love the warm sunshine but my next favourite weather condition is sunshine with a real hard frost...there was plenty of that in Vienna in December 2016 when I went with my two youngest to visit the Christmas Markets.
After an early flight out of Edinburgh, having witnessed a fabulous sunrise enroute, we arrived to very cold frosty conditions and beautiful blue skies.

Home for three nights was the Bendiktushaus...an old monastery in the centre of Vienna close to all the main markets. Rooms here were fairly basic but comfortable with an adequate breakfast provided each morning. It was also very quiet except when the matins started ringing...don't expect a lie in!

After settling in and forty winks we set off in search of food and found the Cafe Griensteidl opposite the Spanish Riding school where we had a lovely meal. We then wandered around the market at the Rathaus ending with Glühwein and an early night.

Thanks to the church bells we were up early on Sunday morning and set off for a walk around the city after our breakfast. It's quite an easy city to navigate...especially with a google map to hand! We eventually ended up at the Natural History museum where we stopped for lunch and glühwein in the market before heading inside for an hour or two.

I love the architecture around the city...so many fine buildings to photograph, although I don't think the phone has done them justice.

The evening was spent wandering around some of the smaller markets and eating street food...with lots of glühwein to keep warm!

Another early start on Monday...those darned bells kept ringing!...so after breakfast we headed to the Schonbrunn Palace zoo for the day. Here the polar bears were undoubtedly the stars of the show. Dinner was had in the Cafe Central that night.

Tuesday we had time for last minute shopping and some lunch before our early evening flight home.

This was a really enjoyable short break with the kids...good company, a beautiful city, nice food and plenty of glühwein...what more could you want!
